The Heights Community development corporation

"Let your light shine so bright that others can find their way out of darkness."

Project Description

  • Empowering the community with knowledge and actionable steps to raise awareness about chronic disease prevention, while promoting healthy choices through a holistic approach.
  • Offering educational workshops and activities that foster lasting healthy behaviors.
  • Establishing a community garden to tackle the issue of healthy food scarcity in the Northwest Corridor and provide nutritious options.
  • Involving youth in a summer feeding program that delivers nutritious meals and engages parents by sharing valuable information for the entire family.

Geographical Service Area

The Heights CDC is dedicated to the Northwest Corridor, a significant transportation route connecting uptown Charlotte and passing through the heart of the historic West End neighborhood, which was established in the early 1900s. When city leaders unveiled their "opportunity corridor" initiative aimed at revitalizing six key areas across Charlotte, they chose the Northwest Corridor as a focal point, underscoring a historic hub of the Black community that had seen little investment for decades.

The Heights CDC envisions itself as a crucial part of this area, aiming to "invest" in the lives of the community members, not just in the streets and buildings. Our findings indicate that wellness is closely linked to awareness of health disparities, preventive measures, and access to food and nutrition for residents in District 2, 28216.

Goal

Our community faces significant gaps linked to unhealthy lifestyles, which encompass the following issues: insufficient access to healthcare, educational obstacles, challenges in transitioning or reentering society, a shortage of nutritious meals for children and seniors, a lack of awareness regarding chronic disease prevention, and the scarcity of affordable housing. By addressing these gaps through both environmental and behavioral changes, we can promote healthier lifestyles for everyone.

Statement of Need

The Heights CDC has embraced the role of community advocate and guide for individuals seeking support in the Northwest Corridor. Our intervention program focuses on the comprehensive wellness of those in need. When medical challenges like heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, mental health issues, nutrition, obesity, and tobacco use are not addressed, individuals may feel a sense of helplessness and despair. It's essential to find solutions to these problems, and The Heights CDC is dedicated to walking alongside them, offering and locating resources to fulfill their needs.
